Internship in South Korea Part 1

Updated: Sep 22, 2020

My internship started more than a month ago. Now that I have a little time for myself, I'll just blog down my experience so far. It is summer semester now, we can either get an internship and claim academic credit or we can continue to take classes as usual. I've never had any working experience in Korea and I am determined to work in a totally different field that I had been working in Malaysia, so an internship in the field of interest is kinda crucial for me before I apply for any full-time job after graduation. I heard that it is hard to get a job without any internship experience let alone from a different major/field, so I am glad that I've gotten one.

It is a startup beauty device company that has around 10-12 employees. It is a relatively small company and we always have lunch with the CEO unless he has meetings.

The biggest cons of working here is the travel time. It is located at Yangjae. I have to transit by both subway and bus to reach the office. It takes around 1.5 hour per way, so I spend 3 hours per day on travel. It is quite tiring to be honest. Plus I have to work my my own personal laptop, so I carry my laptop to work everyday.

Also, I'm glad to have my partner in crime, Miko :D Don't mind the boxes, the company is getting ready to move.

So, for internship, if we work more than 240 hours, we can claim academic credit of 3. Lesser than that, we can claim 1.5. It will be counted in the total academic credit that is required to graduate. I want to clear my credits before graduation as early as possible, so I've decided to take classes at night and internship in the day. After the summer semester, I'll only have 3 elective courses more until graduation. Yay!

Many that are following my Instagram would notice that my lunches are looking great. I won't argue, cause they are! It is included in my internship offer that lunches are provided free of charge by the company. Some company has their own cafeteria so employees will eat for free in the cafeteria, some are given a company card where employees can pay for the lunches they ate using the company card. Mine was the latter. I follow wherever the CEO wants to go (restaurants nearby) or sometimes he lets us choose where we want to go, we are free to select our lunch menus! The CEO will then pay for the food.

The company is moving to a bigger office in a few days, so I will be spending one month here, and one remaining month in the new office. I've been to the new office once to see how the construction work is going, it is located in the middle of some apartments, so I don't see many restaurants nearby...there might not be a lot of nice food in the future... :(

Throwback to my very first 회식 on the first day of internship. It was my first and last meal in this particular restaurant. The CEO definitely over ordered the food. We had 제육김치볶음!

I took this picture on my first day and the CEO was like "Oh Hyori, you are a blogger thats why you like to take pictures! I've been reading your blog." And since that day, before meal, he'll be like "Hyori have you taken pictures of the food? (효리 사진 찍었어?)"

The building that my intern company is in has a huge cafeteria in the basement level. There are also many more restaurants nearby. Normally we go out for better food but if it is raining, we have no choice but to go to the basement level cafeteria.

One of the highlight of the internship, other than the food, is the free shutter bus that transit from the nearest subway station to the office building. The bus is a big comfortable tour bus that is always blasting its air-conditioning. Since it only transit employees working in the same building as my intern company, it is never full, not even half of the bus, and I can have the whole row to myself. It is also way faster than the normal 마을bus that I could've taken, saving me almost 15mins travel time because it doesn't need to stop at any bus stop. It also comes in 15mins interval on the dot.

I'm going to miss the bus the most after the internship

Here are many photos of the lunch I've eaten so far. I'll divide them into 2 parts, one from the basement cafeteria, one from other restaurants nearby.

These are from the basement cafeteria:

These are from other restaurants:

Now, you see how easy for me to gain weight in this company...

Plus, the refrigerator and office is always pack with chocolate, snacks, biscuit, juices, sodas, ice cream, potato chips, coffee, and etc

Always love a fully-packed fridge :D

Also, we had birthday celebration in the office and ate cake. It was so hard to have self-control when it comes to cake :3 The youngest employee was celebrating his 22nd birthday in the office.

Because of the great lunches that I've been eating, I have not cook at home for so long. I've also been skipping dinner because I always get home late and didn't really have time and appetite to eat. But my weight is not reducing :D

I might do another update on my internship once it is over so that I can talk better about the work itself and my whole experience. Till then, I'm going to work hard and enjoy the experience until the last day of internship!

With love,

Hyori
