As many of you know, Korea's convenience store is so widely available that you could be neighbours with them. They have new releases every week and best seller of the month posted on their official social media accounts and also in the store itself. So, since I am spending lesser time out and more time at home, I cook and eat at home everyday. All of a sudden, I feel like eating a meal from the convenience store wouldn't hurt me, so why not, right? Since then, I tend to keep an eye on the new releases from convenience store more these days. I've decided to try a few things that looks delicious and write a review on it.
Bibigo grilled short rib patty set meal 비비고떡갈비정식 (CU) - 4,500won
The nearest convenience store near my house is CU. The first thing I bought was Bibigo Grilled short rib patty set meal (비비고떡갈비정식). Some of you would recognise Bibigo I believe. It is a Korean cuisine brand that produce delicious Korean food that you can heat it up or cook it in a short period of time. I personally love the various dumplings that they sell. It is not expensive and very delicious. And Park Seo-jun is the brand ambassador so...
Anyways, a set meal like this is called 도시락 in Korea which means lunch box. It comes with the main - grilled short rib patty, then side dishes - colour Korean pancakes and egg, jelly with mushrooms and shredded egg, cucumber with salted shrimp and of course, kimchi. It also includes the purple/black rice called 잡곡밥/흑미밥.
I know Bibigo is a trusted brand because I am a fan of their dumplings. I still have two frozen pack of dumplings that is sitting in my freezer as we speak. Bibigo did not fail to impress me. The patty was juicy and tender, packed with flavour. The cucumber with salted shrimp tasted exactly like how my mom made at home. So it kinda confuse me a little, is that a Malaysian food or a Korean food or something that moms would cook? haha
The biggest letdown I would say is the various Korean pancakes. The battered meat balls on the left was kinda flavourless, I couldn't tell what meat is that and it tasted kinda rough. The colour pancake in the middle is made up of crabsticks, fish cakes and spam. It was okay. The egg was acceptable but eggs sold in convenience store never impress me, this was not an exception.
Overall I love the portion of it, and also the fact that it was not plain white rice made me feel a little more healthier...haha
I think the grilled short rib patty definitely speaks on the quality of Bibigo. First bite into the patty and my mind went "역시 비비고 (As expected, its Bibigo)" I would recommend this to anybody who likes non-spicy food and who wants constant quality guarantee :)
2. Strawberry cream sandwich special edition 베리굿~ 딸기 샌드위치 (CU) - 2,400won
Another food that I tried was this strawberry sandwich. I'm sure everybody has seen this before, what makes this one a little special was that it is a special edition. What's the difference you may ask? Well, normal ones are served with normal white fresh cream but for this special edition, it is a strawberry flavoured cream. I think there were also another special edition released few years back that they made the sandwich bread itself strawberry-flavoured!
Honestly, I don't feel any huge different between this edition and the normal one. So, if it is your first time trying strawberry with cream sandwich, you can try any edition, they all taste the same. Well, at least to me haha
3. Hershey's choco roll 허쉬 초코롤 (GS25, 7-11) - 1,500won
And another sweet dessert, the Hershey's choco roll. In Korea, the most popular two chocolate brand I would say is Hershey's and Malteese. There are soooo many products (food & beverages) made with those brands. Not too long ago, they also came out with Hershey's chocolate waffle. I was attracted by the picture uploaded by people who tried it as soon as it was released. It looks so delicious and chocolately. But mine looks nothing like the picture...it was a bit disappointing. There wasn't as much cream in the middle as shown in the picture, it actually has almost none in half of it. I can see through the roll cake LOL
As soon as I opened the package, the strong chocolate scent was raising my already high expectation (I am a chocolate lover), but one bite into it makes my heart cry. It doesn't taste at all chocolate-ty, but I would definitely give credits to how soft the sheet roll is and the small bits of crunchy chocolate bits that adds texture to the roll cake.
However, I personally would not recommend this, given the price and the taste. I don't think it is worth the price and expectation.
